Chances are you’ve seen the red-light cameras popping up when you’re breezing down the highways. These cameras employ the technology of high resolution lenses to capture images of drivers who speed through red lights. These red-light accidents kill close to 1,000 individuals and more than $7 billion in property damage, lost productivity, medical bills and insurance increases. Studies have shown that red-light traffic violations have been on the rise, increasing more than 10 percent since the early 1990s.

Red-light cameras, fully automated devices, collect and transmit all of the evidence that law enforcement needs to prosecute those who run the lights. If you’re caught speeding through the red light you can expect to see a ticket arrive in your mailbox. Included in the envelope will also be photographic evidence of you, in your car, running the red light. The use of the high-resolution lenses in the red-light cameras allows law enforcement to provide the lawbreaker with a high-resolution photo to document the offense.

Trigger technologies detect when a car has moved past a specific point in the road and the cameras usually use a two induction-loop trigger under the road. The brains behind the system, the compute, constantly monitor the traffic signals and the triggers. The traffic triggers, if they’re not of the induction loop variety, work on air-tube sensors, laser or radar technology.
