Photographic Filter Types

The use of filters with cameras offers photographers a wide range of options for capturing images and enhancing their effects. Today’s DSLR cameras are typically equipped with auto focus and built in filters, but for those photographers that still use film, they benefit from the use of filters to manipulate the images.

In order to use various filters, you will need to equip the camera with a stepping ring. A stepping ring allows the photographer to step-up to a higher diameter or step-down to a smaller diameter filter. Stepping rings prevent the photographer from having to purchase the same type of filter for different focal lengths.

The different types of filters used by photographers include:

  • Neutral density filters. These filters allow a photographer to modify the intensity of the light that strikes the film by reducing the amount of light that enters the lens. Neutral density filters don’t impact the color of the subject, but they are useful for slowing down the shutter speed and reducing the amount of available light. Neutral density filters are used in photographing waterfalls to bring forth the mist-like effect. ND filters are necessary on sunny days and allow for images to be captured using a slow shutter speed.
  • Ultra violet (UV) filters are those filters that remove the ultra violet radiation from the image. UV filters prevent haze and fogging from appearing on images.
  • A polarizing filter allows photographers to modify reflections that are captured and will also intensify the blues in skyscapes.
  • Color filters; These filters can correct any number of color issues from yellow-greens, to yellow, to oranges and reds. These filters enhance specific colors and mute others in the backgrounds to give photographs more impact.
  • Skylight filters have a slight red tint to them and help increase the “warmth” in a photograph.

Various filters provide specific effects on a landscape or photograph and can help photographers enhance the images they capture.
