There are some instances in which utilizing the technology of machine vision or robotic applications makes sense. One of those situations could be when a manufacturer needs to deliver precise, multi-dimensional information on a process for which human vision is simply not suited.

A machine vision system can offer detailed information about the actions that robotic components inside a device needs to take in order to correctly interact with the larger object. To successfully deploy machine-visioning means the operator or installer must have a complete knowledge of the tools the robotic application needs to perform its tasks. In a traditional setting, sensors would analyze and interpret data collected from a single point of operation while with machine vision the sensors encapsulate the entire image. Once the image is captured, it is transferred, processed, analyzed and compared to the predetermined parameters that had been programmed in.

A robotic device is better able to adjust itself to the orientation of the parts on a conveyor belt and can also grasp and put the items on a preprogrammed location on a pallet. Vision sensors are used in this process to bridge the link between the component and the robotic device.

The most cost effective deployment of machine vision robotics is to use a camera that can detect the preprogrammed axis points in a machine and transfer the information via an Ethernet connection. In this situation, the robotic device doesn’t “request” information it becomes the receiver for the information the camera captures.

In the early days of robotic applications, the controllers and software were proprietary and manufacturers needed to purchase the software then integrate its technologies into the software to make it compatible, thereby designing a customized solution. Today, as robotic technologies and machine visioning become more a part of the manufacturing landscape the software and hardware used to operate the devices are available as package purchases to the end user thereby making integration a smoother process.

Why are more industries integrating robotic and machine visioning into their processes? Because these devices can more accurately detect product flaws and adjust for disparity and are able to do it more quickly than the human eye.
