Machine Vision Systems

When machine vision aka robotic vision systems are used for visual inspection purposes, quality control soars as these devices deliver multi-dimensional, precision feedback. The vision system provides information as detailed as the action the robotic components in the system should be taking at a particular point in the machining sequence. It can also be equipped with a vision sensor and cameras that allow the machine to “see” what is going in within the larger system and transmit that information to a computer for further analysis. In the past, sensors could capture and interpret data collected from a particular point in a system, now machine visioning captures and sends information on the entirety of the operation.

Once the image and data has been captured, it is transferred to a computer system that allows it to be processed, analyzed and compared to predetermined parameters. The machine vision system is better able to determine whether the workings of the machine are in alignment with the user-defined parameters and this helps make certain machined components will pass inspection. The controller and the camera are the hardware elements of machine vision systems and the software is included in the components that control the graphic user interface as well as the image algorithm outputs.

Robotic vision systems are also useful in assembly tasks that require grasping components and placing them in shipping containers or on pallets. The vision sensors embedded within are the link between the part and the robot itself. Because of this and because the robot can quickly orient itself to changing patterns it is better able to adjust to shifts in patterns than can humans and this makes for a smoother workflow on a warehouse floor.

Machine vision is also ideal for pick-and-place assembly processes such as those used to assemble circuit boards. The predefined parameters allow for the machine to pick up the target object and move it to the next step in the process and ultimately toward the vision inspection system.

“Conversations” between the vision sensor and the robot itself is coordinated through a vision system that is capable of converting information as it relates to the point of intersection on in the frame of reference within the camera.

Because of the advances in technology, machine visioning and robotic applications are more affordable and in reach of more business owners. Additionally, the technologies allow for higher levels of processing information and vision sensors and robotic equipment is more easily integrated than ever before.
