Vision-guided robots speed the wiring of electrical appliances.

Wiring components in electrical appliances is a dull and repetitive task, one that requires absolute precision as a single defective contact could cause an appliance to malfunction. Robots can perform this wiring task more accurately and faster than a human being and the engineers at System Robot Automazione developed a robotic wiring system to do these very tasks.

The robotic system can roll out electric cable, cut it, strip the ends and connect them automatically to the components in the fixture. To accomplish this task, an unwired electrical fixture is manually placed onto a pallet in front of the robot. The centering pins ensure that an operator locates each unique lighting fixture accurately onto the pallet while the reference pins ensure that the robot can locate it accurately prior to wiring. Through the use of a pendant, the robot is “taught” to perform the wiring task.

The robot is programmed to perform the wiring of the fixture through the use of a teach pendant that is used to manipulate the robot through the steps of each wiring task. In use, an operator moves the robot to each component on the fixture that needs to be wired, after which the path of the robot and the position and type of the component is stored in the system.

Vision locates components
To ensure that the robot can accurately locate and wire each component on the fixture, the operator position the electrical unit in a precise position on the universal pallet. In instances where precise placement can’t be guaranteed, the robot is equipped with a vision lens that assists the robot with the task.
