Laser Diodes

The medical community continues to expand its use of laser diodes in the dental industry in both specialty and general dental practices. In fact, many dentists invest in a soft-tissue laser diode machine made the decision for many reasons, all of which benefit the patient. The reasons for using a diode include:

  • They offer a quick return on investment
  • They are inexpensive
  • Diode lasers are compact and that makes it easy to use on a patient
  • Their safety history has been tested and are considered excellent for use with patients
  • Laser diodes are reliable and because they’re optical and electric, they require few moving parts making them reliable and cost effective to maintain
  • By using laser diode technology the need for sutures is greatly reduced and even eliminated in most cases.

Until only recently the diode lasers that were used on soft tissues operated on only two wavelengths, 810 nm or 980 nm. The laser manufacturers chose those wavelengths because of their “energy absorption characteristics” in soft tissues. Additional wavelengths, including 940 nm are now in use as it was found that this wavelength is effective in hemostasis and also reduces tissue retraction during a soft tissue procedure.

Where in the past a physician or dentist may have referred a patient to a different provider because of concerns about the need for sutures, bleeding or other complications that can arise from surgery, with the use of laser diode surgeries, patients are able to remain with a physician with whom they’ve become accustomed.

The benefits to patients who are able to be operated on with the laser diode include not having to have sutures, comfortable healing and recovery and reduced or lack of bleeding. Asking whether a physician or dentist employs laser diode in his or her surgical practices is something every patient should be asking before undergoing a procedure.
