Infrared Technology

Infrared technology may help the military identify sites where nuclear weapons are being made from safe and remote locations. Researchers at BYU, using a long-wave IR camera developed a model that distinguishes the material in every pixel to map out the various materials in an image.

The researchers were trying to determine whether they could determine the materials within an image using a series of pictures taken over time. While this has been problematic in the past, the BYU study determines the material’s unique signature by separating the signals where other methods match the combined signals in a database. This separation of materials is similar to measuring material with a spectrometer in a lab.

The researchers are continuing to develop this technology. The IR imaging and analysis technique is expected to remotely detect exact materials, chemicals, and gases emitted from sites suspected of producing nuclear weapons.

This technology also has the potential for spotting chemical and gas leaks in areas that have been hit by natural disasters and storms.

The expert engineers and designers and Universe Optics can help create and manufacture the proper lens for IR imaging and analysis. Universe Optics creates custom lens designs from concept to prototype to production. For more information visit our website at www.universeoptics.com or call 516.624.2444.
