German researchers recently showed that many markets are making strides toward integration and internalization of robotics, automation and machine visioning technology. China has been shown to be one of the fastest growing markets and are pushing for industry growth.

Machine vision technologies and their applications have been moving into a vastly larger segment of the market because it has been shown to be a technology with incredible versatility and uses. An industry expert writes that, “Machine vision can analyze a soccer players’ movements, recognize people, discern crops from weeds and can measure the holes in a slice of Swiss cheese.” Discerning crops from weeds has been a technology that farmers have begun using in what has been called “precision farming” and is believed to be a technology that can make crop care more efficient and cost effective. The Swiss cheese machining technique is used to measure the holes in a slice and to ensure that even with the holes, that each slice measures an exact eight ounces.

When weighing the areas in which machine technology has already begun to be used, you can see the potential for new and more varied tasks are within reach of the motivated researcher. One of the items that researchers have been working on is with the collaboration between robots working alongside and interacting with humans. In some instances robotic technologies are being used to help senior citizens dealing with loneliness and isolation. Robots are also being tests to help seniors complete simple daily tasks.

Consider that robot technology has long been used by dairy farmers for the milking of the cows and you can see how this technology can be integrated and used to automate even more daily tasks.

If you’ve heard or read about the driverless vehicles and the robots that Google has deployed it’s easy to see how these “automation robots” may soon become a part of our daily lives in ways in which you may not have imagined.

The robotics and automation industry in Germany predicts:

  • There will be more emerging applications and technologies in which robot technologies can be utilized
  • There will be an increase in quality
  • Safety requirements will be more easily able to be met
  • Will be vital to a growing world population
