Initially, most people agreed that CMOS lenses would be cheaper to produce because of the high volume manufacturing process in which they could easily fit into. CMOS may tend to be less expensive at the system level when considering cost related to circuit functions but at the component level for pure image sensor functionality CCD has it beaten.

The main drive behind lower CMOS lens costs is the increased activity of competition developing these lenses with a focus on pushing high volume. The thing to remember is that when determining price and volume, quality control also plays a factor making sure that the technology is sustainable for future endeavors.
