According to the American Cancer Society, esophageal and colon cancer is diagnosed in over 1.5 million people around the world every year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has continued the use of a new innovative medical imaging system that is aimed at detecting these cancers in a very early stage. The 3D high speed imaging system called Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has the advantage in detecting these cancers in a pre-cancerous stage.

OCT is very similar to ultrasound imaging, but instead of sound waves it utilizes light to detect microscopic underlying pre-cancerous tissue. The technology uses both high speed and light optical lenses to actually see the tissue in real time to get an incredibly accurate reading of any pre-cancerous tissue in the body.

This technology is a truly revolutionary one. We’ve seen the amazing things it can do right now and it only gives us hope for the many other things it’s capable of. MIT researchers say that this medical imaging technology could be able to detect many other forms of cancer in their pre-cancerous stages giving patients a much better chance of beating the disease.

These 3D and high speed optical lenses we are able to not only see numerous layers of tissue, but we are also able to see the tissue in real time. This advancement in medical imaging could open the door for a much more accurate form of cancer detection and the future in cancer treatment.
