Gamma Ray

Scientists in the UK have discovered that gamma rays can be “bent like ordinary light.” This was discovered during experiments and it now has opened the door in new fields of imaging research. These gamma rays are highly energetic forms of light and with the uncovering of the ability to bend these rays can lead toward new and more powerful medical applications. The gamma ray-bending is believed to be the next step in a process to enhance imaging techniques and provided more targeted cancer treatments.

A gamma ray is capable of penetrating almost any material regardless of thickness; the rays can even penetrate layers of lead. Gamma rays are also capable of distinguishing differences between atomic versions (isotopes) of the same element. Through the use of a gamma scanner that utilizes a focused beam, it can uncover nuclear material that is concealed in packaging and even in trucks or ships without having to remove any of the packing materials.

Much the same way that light beams may be bent and split through the use of glass prisms, gamma rays can be bent through the use of a silicon prism. Scientists involved in the research feel that through the replacement of silicon with other elements such as gold, it may be possible to construct an optical device that could manipulate gamma rays.

Dr Michael Jentschel, one of the researchers was quoted as saying, “This is a remarkable and completely unexpected discovery with significant scientific implications and practical applications. These include isotope-specific microscopy with benefits across the scientific disciplines, through to direct medical treatment, even tools to address major national security issues.” This research was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
