Diode Lasers

Being confronted with surgery in a spot that could leave an unsightly scar is the reason behind the development of diode laser surgical techniques. The most common benign tumor patients presently are with lipomas, fatty tumors that typically need to be removed. Many of these lipomas are removed for purely cosmetic reasons, although there are cases in which the lipomas cause the patient pain or discomfort.

Many of the lipomas are able to be removed through surgical excision performed under local anesthetic, although this method of removal can lead to scarring. Lipomas appear in close to 3/1000 individuals and can range in size from smaller than 1 centimeter to more than 25 centimeters in diameter. Physicians at Osyris Medical USA in Dallas, Texas performed surgery on a lipoma using a diode laser lipolysis procedure. This procedure incorporated the use of a continuous wave 980 nm diode laser.

To perform the surgery, physicians directed the laser energy toward the lipoma for its removal. The laser was introduced to the tumor and inserted at a rate of 2 millimeters per second as a way to ensure a thorough lipolysis. Success was felt to be achieved when the tumor was found to be liquefied of fat and a breakdown of the fibrous stoma was noted. Once the tumor was liquefied, the materials were expressed from the lipoma.

It was noted that the patient experienced no significant post-op pain or complications and after two months the post-op edema had cleared itself up and the patient presented no pain, tenderness or scarring at the lipoma site.

Universe Optics provides lenses for diode laser custom assemblies and produce laser lens assemblies in standard combinations of focal lengths, wavelengths and barrel styles.
