High resolution lenses for machine vision — standard and custom lens design
High Resolution Lens based Technologies Monitor Vehicle Speed and Seatbelt Compliance
High Resolution Lenses for machine vision, instrumentation, inspection and vibration-sensitive applications. Standard and custom hi-res lens assemblies.
Law enforcement officials are always on the look-out for technologies to help them find drivers who fail to comply with seatbelt laws and who exceed the speed limit. Short of having patrol cars along the highways and byways, new equipment in addition to seatbelt and speed compliance is being developed that can electronically calibrate the distance between vehicles, analyze the surface road conditions and calculate traffic emissions. It is hoped that these high resolution lens camera-based technologies will improve traffic safety conditions and reduce accidents that are caused by traffic infractions.
The traffic enforcement equipment is focused on automatic camera surveillance and a wireless network connection housed in mobile police trailer. With the camera-based technology, law enforcement will be able to remotely monitor traffic and issue tickets for infractions. Additionally, the information will be downloaded into a common database for police as well as road construction operators and environmental officials.
While this technology is still in the testing phase by companies in the European Union, it is hoped the technology will be available for commercial use by 2013.
It’s likely that the technology will be best suited for those stretches of highway that are out of the way of routine highway patrol and for those intersections and roadways that are known for a high incidence of violations by drivers. The initial upfront cost for the purchase of the camera equipment with high resolution lenses may be a deterrent but it’s likely that the long run savings and benefits realized through payment of fines and in the savings of lives and property damage will enhance the return on investment.
