LED Lights

LED Lights

The wavelengths of visible light operate between 380nm and 750 nm; wavelengths that operate at less than 380nm are ultra violet (UV) wavelengths. When you consider that UV wavelengths contain energy that can be harmful to plant life and that the UV range of sunlight is only about 5% greenhouse covering reduce the UV rays of sunlight even more. When it comes to growing plants in a greenhouse setting, high-efficient LED grow lights are typically used, under controlled circumstances.

To aid plants in their growth, LED lights are used in greenhouse settings. Also, because photosynthesis is driven by wavelengths in ranges of 400nm and 700nm, close to 50% of solar radiation occurs between these wavelengths, the LED lights provide this optimal wavelength. Below 400nm, photosynthetic pigments aren’t able to fully absorb light while at wavelengths higher than 700nm the energy not sufficient to support the needs of photosynthesis.

In controlled (greenhouse) growth environments, LED grow lights are utilized as a way to harness the requirements of photosynthesis. The plants exposed to LED grow lights use their own pigments to detect the light, through the process of phytochrome; this helps regulate the size of the leaves, flowering and even the elongation of the plant stems.

Leafs are capable of effectively absorbing wavelengths of no more than 700nm because of photosynthetic pigments. LED grow lights can emit enough full spectrum lighting to enhance all phases of plant growth. Additionally, plant pigments and the water within the plant tissues themselves absorb infrared (IR) that aids in the growth process, even though only a small portion of the absorbed energy light is dispersed through plant metabolism.

LED grow lights are one of the most efficient types of grow lighting utilized in greenhouse settings. Compared to fluorescent grow light technologies, LED lights save greenhouse owners up to 80% on electricity costs and these lights also are considered environmentally friendly.
