National University of Singapore researchers have developed an endoscopic probe that can deliver adjustable-focus capabilities in a smaller, slimmer package; the design will make the procedure less uncomfortable for the patient. The endoscopic probe has a miniature, solid tunable-lens technology that allows for a compact optical zoom and autofocus. Surgeons using the probe can easily switch from a wide field of view to a clear, high res close up view without having to move the probe. Even though the patient is sedated during the procedure, in some instances it is a “Twilight” anesthesia where the patient is conscious enough to speak and in some instances, move while on the table.endoscopic procedure

Using the smaller device with an enhanced camera lens enables surgeons to capture images and perform the procedure without fear of the patient moving. Additionally, because the enhanced camera allows for viewing without having to relocate the probe, the patient remains comfortable while being assured of a thorough examination.

Within the lens system are two transparent polymer plates – one with a flat surface and one with a freeform curved surface. When the transparent plates are aligned with the freeform surface they act as a single unit without losing any of its focusing capability.  The captured images are transmitted to an external camera that is monitored by a technician during the procedure.

The result of this new design is a less bulky endoscope and more comfort for the patient. The endoscope has not been tested in clinical settings yet but is still going through the phases of design and testing.

Patients would benefit from this new technology because they would see quicker recovery times and there would be less chance of internal damage from the bulkier endoscopes. With the slimmer design and the enhanced camera capabilities, surgeons would be better able to do a more thorough examination and receive clearer images and this will also lead to better patient testing results.
