CMOS imagers

New CMOS imagers have improved in the non-visible light spectrum at low power consumption levels enabling the sensors to reach applications formerly targeted only to CCD image lenses.

Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) imagers have began to replace charge-coupled device (CCD) imagers in today’s tech savvy community. Applications such as smartphones and digital cameras are now integrating CMOS technology because of their lower costs and better integration process. Although CMOS is only estimated to hold about 15% of market share when discussing microscopy and machine vision applications, it continues to develop into a very useful imager for high-end applications.

Based on current research, developers are creating CMOS lenses that are as good if not better than their formidable competitor, the CCD lens. Specifically, increases of up to 1000X the speed and sensitivity to wavelengths has been achieved, exemplifying the accomplishments in the visible spectrum regions.
