Molecular Imaging Technologies
Molecular imaging technologies are at the heart of many nuclear medicine procedures. From single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to positron emission tomography (PET) scans, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging technologies molecular imaging agents are utilized.
The evolution of molecular imaging has become one of the cornerstones of molecular medicine, as it is a combination of functional imaging with structural imaging so in-vivo molecular processes can be identified and spatially pinpointed. In many cases, the patient is injected with an imaging contrast dye that binds itself to specific biological proteins. Through the use of molecular imaging, doctors are given the ability to pinpoint specific locations of disease in the body and track the progression of prescribed therapies and its effectiveness. Contrast agents that are used to highlight the disease sites may also be used to carry medicine to those specific sites.
Due in part to the interest in these technologies, advances have been moving rapidly forward and because of this there have been medical advances seen in biochemical agents, cell biology and the way these modalities are able to be analyzed and perfected.
