For many years, medical professionals have understood the issues that can arise from chronic exposure to UV and near-UV rays as it relates to diseases of the eye including cataracts and macular degeneration. Merely stepping into a shaded area will not protect your eye from the UV rays/radiation especially if you’re in an area that is prone to glare such as a desert, snow, water or other highly reflective surface. Eye care professionals urge individuals to invest in a high quality pair of sunglasses that are designed to meet specific criteria for sun protection.

Lenses and the protection they provide vary by manufacturer as well as the style and type of frame and prescription an individual may require. The best types of lenses are those that wrap around the head to provide protection from UV rays coming in through the sides. Wrap around sunglass styles should be fit to “hug” the face to decrease the instance of light seeping through under the cheekbones or at the eyebrow level.

When looking for lenses you want to find a lens that provides 100% protection from UV-A and UV-B rays. The UV-A and UV-B rays are similar in the fact that they can both lead to sunburn or cause skin cancer, but there are also rays called UV-C, but the earth’s atmosphere is particularly effective at blocking most of these.

Near-UV light is also an issue and the exposure to this can lead to macular erosion, a disease that impacts many of us as we age and it leads to deterioration in the clarity through which we see images. To receive protection from these rays, the sun glasses or lenses should indicate the type of sun protection it offers as well as the types of UV rays that they filter. Sunglasses that do not provide information on the percentage of UV rays they block as well as their HEV filtering, likely do not provide the coverage needed to protect your eyes.

Sunglasses, for many, are an afterthought or a fashion statement, but you don’t have to break the bank when purchasing quality sunglasses. When you look at the cost of glasses as they relate to the protection they provide in protecting your fragile eyes and your eyesight, you can see how the investment is worth it in the long run.
