A new species of small sea anemones were found on the underside of the Ross Ice Shelf, just off Antarctica. The Antarctic Geological Drilling located this new species using an underwater robot equipped with a camera.
The robot is a 4.5-foot cylindrical ROV, known as a subsea remotely operated vehicle which is capable of maneuvering under ice and capturing images. Using a vision system with both a downward and forward-tilting camera, a fisheye lens, lights and a projection cage, the ROV can capture incredible views previously inaccessible.
The vision system uses a CMOS image sensor to help capture close up images.
