Two filters that photographers can choose from are UV (ultraviolet) filters and polarizing filters. The difference in these filters is that the UV filter acts as a protection for your lens and also reduces the haze and the possibility of a purple border showing up on your prints; a polarizing filter helps reduce light saturation levels and minimizes the impact of glare on a photo. The type of filter that you choose depends on the type of light conditions under which you are working and the effects you want to see on the images you’re capturing.

A ultra violet filter stops the light in the non-visible spectrum (UV rays, those responsible for sunburns) from reaching the digital camera senor or the film. A UV filter, which fits over the camera lens, heightens the clarity of film photography however, it may detract from the image quality of a digital camera because of a digital camera’s built-in sensors.

A polarizing filter can also reduce glare from water and can enhance the saturation of the image. In some cases though, a polarizing filter can cause certain landscapes to look unrealistic and could increase the chances of capturing a blurry shot.
