Lens Mounting

The type of camera that you use and the particular way in which you will be using your camera to capture images will have a significant bearing on the type of camera lens and camera lens mount that you purchase. An inexperience photographer may not understand the nuances in camera lenses a camera mounts, but the mounts are crucial to the lens fitting snugly and securely onto the camera body.

When it comes to 16 mm movie cameras, a C-mount is typically used. C-mounts are also used for many types of microscopes as well as for closed circuit cameras used in security settings. There are new C-mounts on the market that make it easier for photographers to adapt their cameras to the types of lens they prefer.

How can you determine which type of lens and mount you need:

  • Bringing the camera to a camera repair or specialty camera shop is one of the best first steps. The camera specialist can fit your camera body with a C-mount adapter suitable to the body and the lenses you will be using.
  • The C-mount lens adapter will be affixed to the camera body by aligning the index markers on the camera with the index markers noted on the lens. The C-mount adapter mounts much the same way a lens does to the camera body. Make certain the adapter is securely locked into place.
  • Once the C-mount adapter is in place, the photographer can utilize the various lenses he carries with him to capture the perfect shot. Again, when removing and replacing a lens from the adapter, the index markers must be in alignment and the lens must be snapped securely in place.
  • It may take a few test shots to become accustomed to the additional weight or bulk the C-mount adapter adds to the camera, even though it is minimal, some photographers find it takes them a few practice shots to “recalibrate” themselves to the feeling of the camera.

A C-mount adapter for your camera lens widens the scope of use you get from your camera as it allows for the use of myriad types of lenses.
