Because biochemical weapons and biochemical warfare are seen as a worldwide threat, a new program has been introduced that deploys the use of “tiny laser” technology. What this means is that a research agency has begun developing “small-scale, portable and budget-conscious” technology. The technology, called the Raman spectroscopy system, is one that relies on efficient, high-power, tiny UV lasers.

Being able to detect and identify the potential for the release of biochemical weapons currently exists but the devices used are cumbersome, cost prohibitive and have limited functionality.

A researcher was quoted as saying that, “Today’s detection systems are so large and heavy that trucks are required to move them.” The new technology is a boon because it will allow for the detection with a device that is small and portable enough to be carried by a single individual and they also have higher functionality.

Current technologies also use LED technology and this is a limited functionality tech. The new tiny lasers will use record high power UV laser lighting that will enhance its accuracy.

In addition to detecting biochemical abnormalities, the tiny lasers can be used for diagnostics, manufacturing and atomic clocks.
