Laser-Based Therapy

Laser-Based Therapy

The use of lasers in medical applications is progressing including such uses as drug delivery, oncology, gene therapy, nerve repair and dentistry. Research is advancing toward the use of lasers to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions.

In 1967, Dr. Endre Mester of Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest, Hungary, found that a low-power ruby laser could stimulate faster hair regrowth in mice. Since then, rapid technological developments in lasers have contributed to their safe and effective use in surgical settings, aesthetic treatments, ophthalmology, oncology, cardiology and many other biomedical applications, including veterinary settings.

The use of laser in cosmetic treatments is also growing at a rapid pace. In surgical applications, medical lasers are more precise than conventional scalpels causing less damage to surrounding tissue which results in reduced pain, bleeding, swelling and scarring for the patient.

Laser therapy is one of several emerging medical and veterinary techniques using high-intensity light to stimulate cellular function in tissue, or to shrink and destroy tumors and precancerous growths. The custom laser lenses are directed on the surface of a body or used to reach areas conventional surgery techniques can’t thru the use a flexible fiber optic endoscope equipped with a laser diode lens.

This technology is advancing so rapidly for use in so many medical applications that sales of laser-based instrumentation are expected to grow from $682 million in 2013 to reach expected sales of $746 million globally in 2014. This rapid growth is a result of the lasers’ efficiency, safety and precision.

Universe Optics is a manufacturer of custom and standard diode laser lenses, c-mount lenses, lens assemblies for scanners, CCTV, CCD/CMOS, medical imaging, surveillance systems, machine vision and night vision systems. The company manufactures lenses and technologies such as those used in robotic and laser applications.
