According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, University of Rochester has received an award totaling $500,000 to develop a national roadmap for photonics. The goal is to partner with the National Photonics Initiative to introduce the new technology and work out any challenges it may have in the developmental process moving forward in the United States.

The US has been the leader in developing photonics technology in the past years however; the U.S. share of this technology development has dropped to less than 10% of photonics components sold worldwide. University of Rochester hopes to identify priorities that will help address this waning number and regain control of photonics sales worldwide.

Photonics technology is essential for the growth of the nation, providing integral parts into some of the most important aspects of our country and personal life. Photonics pierces all aspects of technology including the U.S.’s defense system, medical imaging technologies using custom medical lenses, flat-panel TVs and even smart phones.

The goal of providing this roadmap is a crucial start to increasing the competitiveness of the U.S.’s manufacturing and sales throughout the world. Understanding the importance of bring this technology to the forefront of the market will help keep the United States playing an important role as technology moves forward.
