Operating rooms and other areas of hospitals and doctor’s offices are seeing an increase in computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), microscopy and other imaging protocols that aid in both diagnosis and treatment of patients’ ailments. The devices themselves have seen advances in technology, as has the imaging software that supports it. Additionally where the machine technology was, in the beginning, bulky, almost impossible to move, and expensive, costs and portability issues have been addressed making these technologies more readily available.

The addition of three-dimensional (3D) modeling applications has enhanced medical diagnostic equipment thus allowing the physicians access to improved images. The 3D technology is captured through the X-ray devices and transmitted to a computer that is either offsite or in an operating room or physicians’ office for review. These computers and software aid doctors during surgical procedures as it allows for robotic devices to navigate the area of the patient’s body that is under review and provides more accurate information, in real time, to the surgical staff.

3D technology in the medical field allows for a CT scanner or MRI machine to view more “slices” of data because of the enhanced rendering of the image. The ability to capture and render three-dimensional images aids radiologists in gauging the shape and contour of the patient’s organs after which abnormalities can be pinpointed. The information gathered can be used to form a diagnostic treatment plan or during robotic aided surgical procedures.
