Going “green” is becoming a way of life for many individuals and businesses. The trend is also overtaking the medical and healthcare industry as patients want to limit their exposure to harmful treatments, medications and radiation emitted from diagnostic imaging machines. Infrared and thermal imaging diagnostic tests fall into the area in which the need for green technologies is being welcomed by both technicians and patients.

Medical digital imaging technology is a way for physicians to view the inner workings of a patient in a noninvasive method. Through the use of x-rays and other digital imaging equipment, infrared technologies are able to capture heat variations in various areas of the patient’s body and this can help the physician compile a diagnostic treatment plan.

The process of being able to pinpoint changes in the human body is not entirely new; it was practiced by ancient Egyptians when the healers would place their hands on a patient’s body and note areas that had “hot spots.” Thermal imaging technology of today does the same, but obviously at a higher degree of accuracy, and can capture images that show the doctor areas that may be fighting infection or have other maladies.

Thermal imaging is used in mammograms as the technology is well-suited to the highly sensitive nature of the breast tissue. Repeated exposure to radiation is a consideration for both patients and their physicians and thermal imaging allows for testing with minimal exposure to radiation and without invasive testing procedures.

Patients appreciate the ability to have a test that involves no incisions and infrared technology allows for that. With this technology there is no contact with the patient’s body, but heat signals are picked up and transmitted to a computer screen where it can be analyzed and used in the formation of a treatment plan. Infrared technology is also employed by law enforcement when seeking lost individuals in rugged terrains and by firemen when seeking individuals trapped in burning buildings; the ambient heat radiating from a human’s body is uniquely visible from its surroundings.

Continuing improvements in infrared technology and computerization have made these devices more mainstream and more of a component in diagnostic detection and treatment.
